LG LU6200 iPhone 5 Rival Will Feature 720p Display

Rivals to the iPhone 5 are lining up faster than ever as Apple’s next smartphone gets set for an impending October launch; Korean manufacturer LG is preparing a super phone called the LU6200.
The device (via Money Today) comes with a 4.5-inch AH-IPS display with a 1280×720p resolution; this gives the LU6200 a pixel density of 326ppi, which is the same as the iPhone 4 (and possibly the iphone 5).
Other hardware specifications include a dual core SoC clocked at 1.5GHz; that could well be the TI OMAP4460 rather than an updated version of the Nvidia Tegra 2.
There’s also 1GB RAM, 4GB onboard storage, an eight-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing one, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a textured finish and Android OS 2.3.5 Gingerbread with Ice Cream Sandwich in the pipeline.
The fact that it comes with an LTE logo at the back means that it is almost certainly going to run on LG’s own U+ LTE network. The LU6200 is similar to the Samsung Galaxy Note except that it has a smaller screen and comes with an Exynos SoC clocked at 1.4GHz.
Expect the phone to carry the Optimus branding when it (eventually) launches in Europe and the UK; no details have yet emerged about battery life.
Samsung Mulls Open Source Path for Bada

Korean electronics giant Samsung is reportedly planning to make available its proprietary Bada operating software platform to outside developers as well as third party device maker sometime during the next year with a follow on move of turning it into open source platform.
The move, according to many industry analysts, has been proposed with the view of reducing the company’s reliance on the Google Android platform, as well as achieving some sort of momentum in the growth of the OS software.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Galaxy maker currently does not have any plan whatsoever to acquire a new software company in the near future, thus, aiming towards making Bada an open source platform by the fall of 2012.
The Wall Street Journal report was citing inputs taken from “a person familiar with the situation.”
Samsung’s sudden shift of focus into Bada, as many believe, could be nothing but an inevitable consequence of Google’s purchase of Motorola a few weeks back.
There were already rumours on the streets that Google’s acquisition of Motorola – another leading name in the smartphone industry, could make other Android phone makers feel a bit insecure.
“In theory, it makes sense to turn Bada into a multiplatform operating system because that will increase the total addressable market for service developers. But in reality, it is not yet fully clear whether Bada can scale up to bigger displays” Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytics said, according to the Wall Street Journal report.

LG Optimus Q2 Handset To Compete WIth Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro

LG will add another Optimus handset to its current portfolio, the Q2, which is includes a slide out physical keyboard, not unlike the HTC Desire Z.
The phone is an improved variant of the LG Optimus 2X; it comes with a 4-inch WVGA IPS-based LCD touchscreen with a 700-nit brightness, Android OS 2.3 Gingerbread and the dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 3D which is clocked at 1.2GHz.
The rest of the specification is pretty mundane; a five megapixel rear camera, a front facing VGA camera, Wi-Fi direct, a microSD card reader, Bluetooth and onboard GPS.
The Korean company also claims that its phone – which will launch in South Korea next weekend – will be 2.5mm thinner than the competition and 0.35 ounces lighter but didn’t say which competitor(s) it was referring to.
It is not known whether or when the phone will be available in Europe. At the moment, there are no new handsets with full QWERTY keyboard on offer from mainstream phone manufacturers – other than the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro.
The original Optimus Q has never been sold in the UK and Europe; the HTC Desire Z was the main option for those looking for a decent QWERTY Android handset.
Pew Survey: Nearly One Third US Adults Prefer Texting Over Talking

Near about one-third of all US adults prefer to keep in touch with one another via text messages rather than voice calls, a new report claims.
The study was conducted by the research outfit Pew Research as a part of their Internet and American Life Project, and according to it, 83 percent of the adult population in the country were in possession of a mobile phone.
According to the Pew report, 73 percent, meaning almost three-quarter of the adults in the country had the habit of sending text messages. But, when it came to the question of preferred method of contact, 31 percent of the participants in the study admitted for them, texting is more convenient, whereas 51 percent said they would rather prefer voice calls. 14 percent said their preferred method depends on the situation.
The study also claimed that for more than half of the “heavy-texters”, meaning those who send more than 50 texts in a single day, voice calling was only the second preferred option- texting obviously being the most preferred choice.
“Heavy text users are much more likely to prefer texting to talking. Some 55% of those who exchange more than 50 messages a day say they would rather get a text than a voice call,” the Pew report says.
Say “Hi†To My Little Friend : A Quick Preview Of iHi

Following a recommendation from a friend (ever notice how powerful that is?), I have been messing about an amazing little iPhone app called iHi.
It is amazing not because it squeezes every last ounce of processing power from my iPhone, or has me wasting hours per day on some addictive game.
No. iHi is amazing for the pure simplicity of the idea and the clean execution. iHi is one of those apps that leave you scratching your head asking “why didn’t I think of that?”
Put simply, iHi is super simple visual communication. You can pick from a list of pre set words or phrases:
When selected, the phrase is displayed as a striking white Arial font on black background for maximum contrast and visual impact.
You can watch this short video to see the app in action.
Where the app really comes to life is with the premium upgrade which costs £1.49 in the UK. This allows you to enter your own messages to add to the set that come as standard.
However within a few days the overriding joy of the app became abundantly clear to me. Call me childish and shallow, but it is phone based abuse of friends and colleagues!
For the last three weeks every meeting, conference, airport lounge, flight, meal in a restaurant has been littered with iHi delivered abuse. This makes the app very viral, as pretty much the entire team has now downloaded the app to allow them to respond to the abuse they are receiving!

Just last week during our 2012 roadmap planning meetings we were using iHi to score roadmap candidates as they were presented! An added bonus is looking back on the list of words and phrases I have entered into iHi over the past three weeks.
This is actually one of the most powerful ways to reminisce where I have been, and what I was doing at that point in time. Adding time & location stamps to each would be pretty cool.
Join me tomorrow as I speak to Neil Stanley, the guy behind the iHi concept.
