PostHeaderIcon LG Optimus 2X to get Android 4.0 later this year

LG Mobile will release the Android 4.0 ICS update for its Optimus 2X in third quarter of this year. This has been revealed by LG Singapore on its Facebook account.

LG had earlier promised to release the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its top of the line devices in second quarter of 2012.

So basically the users in Singapore can expect to receive it between July-September period. Most likely India based LG Optimux 2X users will get the Android 4.0 ICS update during same time if there is no delay.

It is to be noted that LG has already launched L-styled LG Optimus L7 smartphone which comes with Android 4.0 ICS running by default.

Like Sony, LG has been criticised for late roll out of operating system updates. Though LG is one the major players of the Android based smartphones, but timely delivery of updates will definitely affect the buying decisions of potential customers.

PostHeaderIcon Global Mobile Internet Use Increases

Mobile internet use has exploded and now counts for 10% of global web traffic, according to a study by an internet-monitoring firm.

Pingdom, the company that conducted the research, has found that Asia has the highest regional figures for mobile internet use with 17.84% of web traffic coming via mobile devices. The figure shows 193.5% increase since similar research was conducted in 2010.

Despite Asia’s overall prominence in the statistics, several individual countries far exceed the eastern region’s figures. Although mobiles account for 14.85% of total internet use in Africa, over half of web traffic in Zimbabwe comes from mobile devices, with 58.06% of the countries net use being conducted on phones. Nigeria also weighs in with similar numbers, with mobile web traffic in the African nation accounting 57.89% of total web usage.

Results from western nations showed a much lower percentage of web use on mobiles. Britain scored highest out of the European nations with 10.71%, and the USA had an even lower figure with mobile web use accounting for only 8.61% of net traffic.

However, figures from a poll conducted via Dialaphone’s Facebook page do show a slight difference to the UK statistic provided by Pingdom, with a much higher number of people using the internet on their phones.

Of those who took part, 31.5% said mobiles are their preferred method of accessing the internet when given a range of options, with 52% naming a computer as their conduit to internet perusal. Around 10% used a games console to get online, and 5% accessed the internet on a tablet device.

Such a big difference between figures for first world countries and those of the developing world could be attributed to the limited availability of computers in poorer countries and the relative ubiquity of mobile phones. Much has been made of the role played by Twitter in the slew of revolutions across the Arab world early last year with a great deal of the social network’s usage during those events coming from mobile devices.

The range of options mobile users now have for going online has expanded far beyond simply opening a browser and navigating to a webpage, especially since the explosion in apps and social networking. And with the likes of Facebook and Twitter even beginning to replace some of the tasks previously performed by mobiles, such as texting, it seems that the volume of web traffic coming via mobile devices will only increase further in the future.

PostHeaderIcon 3 Idiotic Emergency Ideas From Local Authorities

Communications tech is the most important advance in the provision of justice since we first suggested maybe not murdering each other. Most Westerns are based on the idea of riding a horse until you find someone who’s even heard of the guilty party, then riding further to find one who hasn’t been shot. Nowadays you can call in crimes from anywhere, and in our efficient techno-world many criminals save everyone time by using phones to catch themselves. If phones were any more effective in reducing crime they’d be Robocops, but the authorities don’t always have the best ideas for using these intuitive devices we all carry around with us.

1. “999, I’m being followed!” “Yes, that’s us.”

Strathclyde plain-clothes police officers spotted a car driving dangerously on a motorway, so they engaged in a high-speed chase in an unmarked car. Because the best way to calm someone down on a motorway is convince them they’re in an action movie. When you’re chased by the police you realise you’d better stop (or are insane). When you’re chased by two random and extremely-serious looking strangers there’s the exact opposite effect. When the panicking and now even more dangerous driver called 999 to report that he was being chased by scary strangers, the police replied “Yep, that’s us!” At this point the man pulled over because that’s what you do for police, even when they’ve just proven they may be too stupid to hold that position.

2. “What is your emergency and credit card number?”

An American city is planning to charge for emergency services, and you can tell they’ve really thought about the important issues here: they’ve already got their rates set out. (They don’t seem to think there are any other issues.) $1,000 for fires in any building over four stories high and $600 for car fires. We know American cars are big, but that math means they’re over six meters tall. Passaic city insist that the charges will only be levied against insurance companies, because apparently, the city council is poor despite living in a magical fantasy land where insurance companies just hand out money without complaining. Passaic residents can look forward to new insurance surcharges like “living in a penny-pinching madhouse like Passaic”, which we expect to be between $999 and $1001 dollars. No, wait, insurance, so call it $2000. Plus tax.

3. The Idiotic Informant App

West Virginia has developed an app which lets anyone submit “Suspicious Activity” reports to the police and other federal agencies. It’s available for both iPhone and Android, which is weird, because it must have been developed by people who’ve never even heard of the internet. The app allows people to send anonymous text and pictures. The only anti-terrorism effect of anonymous web users being able to upload photos to the police is that the police will no longer be surprised if a terrorist flashes his genitals or starts misspelling swear-words at them.

PostHeaderIcon Android phone for elderly unveiled

We have got few phones targeted at elderly in India like the iBall Ashaan and Intex Vision. However, these phones are very basic and do not offer many features.

Doro, a Swedish company which is developing telecom products especially for seniors, has come up with an Android phone specially designed for elderly people and also a software for tablets.

The phone, called PhoneEasy 740, and the Doro Experience tablet software will be launched soon in the USA. Infact, for many of us who have got not so tech savvy mothers, this could be an ideal gift this Mother’s Day.

The PhoneEasy 740, which comes with a skinned version of the Android 2.3, has a very simple user interface with big buttons and simple apps placed on the top.

What is good is the fact that the phone is well placed even in terms of hardware with a 320×480 resolution bearing touch screen, 3G , WiFi , a micro SD memory card slot, Bluetooth 4.0 and a 5-megapixel camera.

There are several unique features of the Doro phone which includes HD voice, an app that uses the camera as a magnifying glass, an unusually powerful speaker, and a configurable panic button on the back.

The start screen of the phone has only four huge bars on the screen representing Contacts, Calls, Messages and Email. On scrolling down you get other options like a Web browser, camera magnifying glass app, and Doro’s own app store.

The operation of the phone is through the touch screen or the cursor keys. Doro’s app store, called Doro Selection, will initially have about 15 well-selected apps including news, banking, and transportation-related apps, and there will be a way to get arbitrary Google Play apps onto the PhoneEasy 740 too.

One of the best parts of this phone is the fact that someone else like Son or Daughter can remotely manage this phone. This interface allows remote management of the phone through a PC that let relatives set up and monitor the device from anywhere; they can remotely add and remove apps and can set up accounts. This is especially useful as most elderly people do not get to use most feature of the handset as they find it difficult to setup.

The company has also released a software that simplifies the interface of the Android based tablets. With this interface Doro has entirely replaced the standard Android interface with big, bold, simple icons. The Doro Experience on tablets can be set up remotely by friends and family with PCs, and even includes a simplified Facebook application so the tablet user can see photos and comments.

The good part is that it is not a hardware but a software, which means that it can be downloaded even in India. Though that hasn’t happened yet, it is definitely a possibility.

PostHeaderIcon Wolfenstein 3D Comes to iOS

Iconic first person shooter Wolfenstein 3D is now available to iOS users, and to celebrate the RPG’s 20th anniversary it is free to download for a limited time.

The landmark game was first released for PC gamers in 1992 and has since been ported to  numerous platforms. It has now made the jump to Apple’s iPad and iPhone thanks to developer ZODTTD, who has formerly been responsible for bringing other landmark games such as Quake and Doom to iOS.

The premise of the game essentially revolves around the lead character (William “B.J.” Blazkowicz) attempting to escape from the Nazi POW camp, Castle Wolfenstein. Cue lots of running around shooting Nazi footsoldiers, dogs and mutants (yes, mutants).

Sticklers for detail will be pleased to know that the iOS version of the classic game comes complete with all of the original weapons and enemies such as the terrifyingly-monikered ‘MechaHitler’. The app is available for free for a limited time from the App Store.
