Google prepping Social Gaming app for Android
After launching an app store specifically for Android devices, Google has now set its eyes on the social gaming for Android devices. Business Insider reported that Google is working on a social gaming app for Android platform with achievements system. Under this achievements system, the registered gamers will get awards and trophies for attaining certain goals in the games. No fixed timelines were shared for this app’s announcement but we expect to hear more details at the Google I/O Conference in early June.
Back in March, The Mobile Indian reported about Google’s plans to work on a unified gaming platform. The objective was to connect the web browser (HTML5) based games with Android platform based games.
Google is now planning to launch a social gaming and achievements system which in away might be similar to the Apple Game Center. A person familiar with the developments informed Business Insider that the social gaming app will include leaderboards, achievements system, trophies, awards and have social aspect to it.

The Google’s Social Gaming app will connect all Android based device users to one common platform for updating their scores and sharing achievements unlocked with others. As of now, the challenge for Google is to bring this Social “Achievements” System and implement with already existing games and new ones in the anvil.
At the upcoming Google I/O conference, Google is expected to show the next major Android 5.0 Jelly Bean operating system. Google is also expected to make the API (Application Programming Interface) of the social gaming app available to the game developers.
Google’s group product manager, Punit Soni did promise a unified social and mobile gaming experience for consumers. In a nutshell, Google will get into games and that will also integrated the social achievements system.
Google’s move will be closely compared with the Apple’s existing Game Center.
CTIA Wireless 2012: Day Three Round-Up

Following all the news from days one and two, the final instalment of this year’s CTIA Wireless show was a relatively quiet one with few announcements from the major vendors. However, the day was not totally devoid of newsworthy items and here is our round-up of the major stories:
RIM
In a conversation with The Verge, CTIA’s Rob Mesirow mentioned that RIM will feature heavily in the trade organisation’s Enterprise and Applications show in October. The Canadian manufacturer is set to have a major presence in the trade hall at the event as well as deliver a keynote address. Interestingly, BlackBerry 10 is rumoured for release in the autumn so we may well see a big announcement from RIM at the conference.

Nano SIM
SIM card maker Giesecke & Devrient has showcased its design for the forthcoming nano SIM which has been developed in partnership with Apple. The iPhone creator has been involved in a very public battle with Nokia regarding the forthcoming nano SIM design, with the Finnish manufacturer proposing a much more radical design. The decision of which will be adopted is to be decided via a vote of the members of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute in the near future.

Bill Clinton
Former US President Bill Clinton took to the stage on the final day of CTIA Wireless to discuss, among other things, the lessons that politicians can learn from the wireless industry. In his second appearance at the conference (his first coming at Orlando in 2007) Clinton touched upon a wide number of issues, with the over arching message being one of alignment between tech ideologies and political diversity.
That is all from CTIA Wireless in New Orleans, but we are already looking forward to the Enterprise and Applications show in October.

Word Press for Android gets a host of new features
Popular free open source blogging tool and dynamic content management system Word Press has launched its Android based application, enabling users to let others control their blog. But in order to simplify users’ lives a little bit more Word Press has announced a new update for the Word Press application on Android. In this update the application gets some new controls that were previously missing from the application, along with a host of bug fixes and stability upgrades.

The first upgrade to the application now brings along an auto save mode. So now users need not worry about their posts or comments getting lost in transition as the application will save comments after every 60 seconds. Along with this users also get support for monitoring and editing comments on posts. Users were earlier not allowed to do so from within the application and this addition in particular will be highly appreciated now.

THE new application gets support for the new Wordpress.com reader and users can also access comments while reading posts using their Android device. Further, there is interconnectivity added to the app and users will be able to share comments using Word Press app on other connected Android applications as well.

Editing images would also be easier now as the update adds support for setting the width of linked images from within the app as it will allow users to control the width of their posts as well. Last but not least the app also gets a new set of translation tools for users who get a lot of comments from international readers.
Existing and new users can head straight to the Google Play store and access the new application or the upgrade of the older one by following this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wordpress.android
All Networks Register Complaints with Ofcom Over Everything Everywhere’s 4G Plans

When Everything Everywhere initially announced its plans to introduce a 4G LTE network in the UK before the end of 2012 (and ahead of Ofcom’s spectrum auction), the communications regulator gave competitors until 17 April to register any complaints.
This period was then extended until 8 May, to provide adequate time for all parties to respond, during which Everything Everywhere continued its campaign with the 4GBritain.org website, and some fairly outlandish claims that by introducing 4G to the UK, the economy would be boosted by £75bn by 2020.
A report published by the BBC has now revealed that Vodafone, O2 and Three all registered complaints with Ofcom in the allotted time, and all strongly opposed the plan.
Vodafone, capitalising on the upcoming London Olympics, used a sporting analogy to make its point, saying that giving Everything Everywhere the go-ahead would be like letting some runners start a race while others were “chained to the starting blocks.”
Despite the strong opposition, Everything Everywhere remains positive, telling the BBC that it’s still ready to roll out a 4G network and that “if in launching 4G we encourage others to make the requisite investments … then that can only be a good thing.”
Ofcom will make its decision in June, but has yet to announce the exact date. The regulator has already indicated it was inclined to approve the plan, but this was before such a heated backlash, so it’ll be interesting to see whether it has been swayed over these past months.

BlackBerry Curve 9320 overview
On the surface, the BlackBerry Curve 9320 holds a petite 2.44 inch non touch display with the familiar QWERTY keypad and touch sensitive optical trackpad combo. It’s a safe design that feels sturdy and secure. Under the bonnet there’s a 512 MB processor, offering twice the oomph of the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 and 8520. There’s even a 3.2 megapixel snapper with flash and video recording so you can show your friends across your social media channels, exactly what you’ve been up. The removable 1450 mAh battery also appears efficient, offering 18 days standby time and up to 30 hours continuous music playback. With the latest BlackBerry OS 7.1 preloaded on the Curve 9320 you can control your power output with the Battery Saving Mode app; designed to automatically reduce brightness settings and connectivity at a threshold set by you.

Another Aakash tablet’s rival launched
Kobian, a player in computer peripherals and makers of tablets under Mercury brand, has announced the launch of iXA Tab for Rs 3,999. However people who wish to buy this tablet will have to wait till May 23 when the booking starts.
The iXA Tab comes with Android 2.3 operating system and weighs 341 grams. Like the Aakash tablet, it comes with a resistive touch screen but is powered by a 1.0 GHz processor compared to the 800 mAH processor of Aakash. Besides, The Kobian tablet has 512 MB RAM and 4 GB internal storage which is expandable to 32 GB through a micro SD card.

The Kobian iXA tab comes with inbuilt WiFi , 0.3 megapixel camera in the front but has no rear camera. Optional accessories like case with keyboard will also be available.

Specification wise, the tablet is not very different from other low cost offerings including UbiSlate, Aakash, or BSNL’s Penta tablets. However, real world performance is something which will be important to the tablet”s success. Most low cost tablets till now have disappointed with their performance, hope this does better.

Sushmita Das, country manager, India, Kobian said, “We have had immense success with mTab range , the launch of iXA Tab is for our young students and generation who would want to have the ownership of a tablet. They are now able to get all the features bundled in one product with a very attractive price tag. Since it’s based on Android Gingerbread, user has the access to all Google applications and can have the ultimate experience. If one can get a Tablet at the price of a mobile phone then why not grab it.”
According to the company, the iXA Tab is a limited edition product priced at Rs 3,999. It has though not announced warranty and availability, or the booking process which will be revealed when the booking starts.
Makers of Ubislate, BSNL Pantel and Aakash had followed an identical bookings process – inviting people to pre-book the tablet and promised to deliver the devices later. However, all these tablets have been delayed and their makers have not been able to deliver the devices in a timely fashion.
However, given that Kobian has been in the tablet business for more than a year now with its Mercury tablets, they should be able to do better on that front.
But since it is a low cost tablet and bookings is expected to run in thousands of units, Kobian might have difficulty in coping with the demand just like others in the space.
