Apple Sends Out Invites To 4 October iPhone Event

Apple has put an end to months of mounting speculation by sending out an official invitation to an Apple iPhone event to be held next Tuesday. The RSVPs were delivered to prominent technology journalists today and featured the almost casual throwaway line “Let’s talk iPhone”.
The news comes via tech site Engadget who report that the invites request attendance at the Apple Campus next Tuesday (4 October), a venue widely tipped in recent months to host any potential iPhone 5 announcement.
Word on whether the event will be streamed over the internet as happened with the iPad 2 unveilling, but all eyes will be surely be tuned on to live chat feeds from the tech sites in attendance at 10AM Pacific Standard Time or 6PM in the UK.
Verizon Backs Samung in Legal Battle with Apple

Verizon stands behind Samsung in the Korean company’s legal battle against iPhone maker Apple.
According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, Verizon said in a legal filing that if the courts ban some of Samsung devices, its investment in the next generation will be negatively impacted.
“That investment depends on consumers having access to devices that can make use of that network. The accused Samsung devices are among the few products that can access Verizon Wireless’s next-generation high-speed network,” Verizon said in a filing with the U.S. District Court in Northern California.
Verizon recently started selling Apple’s iPhone device in the United States, something which allowed the company to compete against AT&T, which was the sole provider of the iPhone. So, it is strange that the Verizon would go against one of its most important mobile phone partners.
Apple has launched a worldwide legal assault on Samsung, claiming the company infringed on some of its design and technology patents in its Android powered devices. The two companies are locked in legal battles in Germany, United States, Australia and South Korea.
Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro To Launch On October 6th

The first week of October 2011 is expected to be one of the busiest ever when it comes to product launches, with Apple launching the iPhone 5 and other manufacturers queueing up a slew of Android and Windows Phone 7 handsets, all set to disrupt Apple’s extravaganza. Now Sony Ericsson is set to make the Xperia Pro available from the 6th of October according to a listing on Clove Technology’s website.
The device was launched back in February 2011 at MWC in Barcelona but has not gone on sale until now. The Japanese company did not explain why the handset has been delayed by nearly eight months and at least four months after the Xperia Play, arc and Neo – which were launched at the same time – went for sale.
The Xperia Pro comes with a 3.7-inch FWVGA capacitive touchscreen display with Mobile Bravia Engine, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz SoC, 320MB RAM, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and an eight-megapixel camera with LED flash which uses Sony’s Exmor R camera lens.
It also has a four-row slide out QWERTY keyboard, an HDMI out, a front-facing camera and a micro USB port. We’re wondering whether the delay was not caused by the fact that the smartphone only comes with 320MB RAM but has to support Android Gingerbread AND Sony Ericsson’s own UI.
Facebook iPad App Finally Coming at iPhone 5 Press Event?
It’s difficult to imagine the impending Apple press event being any more anticipated, but if the recent rumours are correct, it’s going to be much more than the iPhone 5 on display! According to both Mashable and Robert Scoble, Facebook will also be present and will launch their long-awaited iPad app.
The native tablet application has apparently been ready since May, at a time when TechCrunch discovered it was actually hidden inside the existing iPhone app’s code, and all that was needed was a jailbroken device to unlock it. So why has it been delayed if it’s already done?
We’ll never know all the facts, but former Facebook engineer Jeff Verkoeyen has spilled at least some of the beans on his blog, citing a spat between Apple and Facebook as the main problem. Mr. Verkoeyen is a trustworthy source too, seeing as he actually built the Facebook iPad app, then left the company for Google after its launch was continually delayed.
Facebook were annoyed with Apple after they included Facebook Connect in their iTunes-driven Ping social network without consulting them first, and the relationship became even more strained after it was announced that Twitter would be integrated into iOS 5. Pundits are now hypothesizing that Apple and Facebook now realize they have a common enemy – Google – and need to join forces to combat them.
In addition to the iPad app, Facebook could also announce a dedicated iOS application store and a completely updated iPhone app too. Get ready for October, as it’s going to be a huge month for mobile fans!

Microsoft Accused of Collecting Geo-Location Data Unbeknownst to Windows Phone 7 Users

Microsoft Corp.’s Windows Phone 7 has been tracking and collecting location based data without notifying the user.
Worse even, the lawsuit filed against the company states that the WP7 device(s) in question were collecting and sending geo-location data to its servers even after users had declined authorisation to indulge in such practice.
Similar accusations were brought against other two big names in the smartphone market – Google’s Android and Apple’s iPhone. The intensity of the controversy at the time was so high that both Google and Apple eventually had to offer assurances that no such activities would continue in the future.
According to the lawsuit filed against the Windows maker, geo-location data are sent to inference.location.live.net, a Microsoft service. Microsoft denied the charges during the initial phases of the trial.
According to the Windows Phone 7 jailbreaker Rafael Rivera, the collected location based data, which he described as “pin point accurate” are sent to agps.location.live.net and inference.location.live.net.
If Rivera’s findings are fount to be correct, the lawsuit against the technology giant will be strengthened further, thus making it tougher for the company to deflect the charges.
Top Apps To Find A Lost Or Stolen Phone
Most of us have been there; we can’t find our mobile phone, it’s not in our bag, pockets, on our desks and it’s not fallen out in the car. Is it lost? Has it been stolen?
Save yourself the pain of lamenting the loss of your precious handset, along with all your photos, videos and documents by making ure you have some form of tracking system to help reunite you with your mobile friend, or at least to protect your data from afar. Here are some of the best apps to help you do just that:

iHound (iOS and Android)
For Android: The iHound App will constantly track the location of your phone, waking up every 10 minutes to update itself. In the event that your phone is lost or stolen, you can remotely lock it to prevent your private data from falling into the wrong hands.
Additionally, you can choose to erase private information, including photos, texts, contact details and any stored data. The app also provides access to the instant messenger, allowing direct communication with anyone who has the phone – handy if it’s been left on the train/bus etc.
For iPhone: The iPhone version of iHound is slightly different in that it lets you remotely activate a loud alarm, as well as the other features found on the Android variant. This is especially handy  if you’ve lost your phone in the car, down the back of the sofa as the ensuing racket will allow you to easily locate it.

Lookout Security & Antivirus (Android)
This nifty little Android app helps protect your personal data, has antivirus built in, lets you back up your data, and also locates your phone. Oh, and it’s free too. You can check what you’ve backed up via the browser dashboard and if  your phone is stolen you can sound an alarm which will put your fiendish thief on edge. The app also lets you remotely wipe any data so no one can see it.

MobileMe/iCloud (iPhone)
This useful app comes directly from Apple themselves. It’s free, but the downside is that you have to have an iPhone 4 (or get your hands on the upcoming iPhone 5) to be able to use it. Features include location mapping of your lost phone so you can track it down, the option to send a message to be displayed on your device’s screen and the remote setting of a password lock to prevent anyone accessing your phone.  However, MobileMe is due to be replaced by the iCloud service on the upcoming iOS 5 update, although it’s thought that these features will remain.
Via Sues Apple, Cites Processor Patent Infringement

iPad maker Apple has been sued by a Taiwanese chip designer over a bunch of patents related to microprocessor technology.
Via Technologies claims that Apple has infringed on its patents related to the manner in which chips, used in some of its products, use and manipulate data. The Apple products named in the lawsuit include the iPad, iPhone, Apple TV and the iPod, along with the software that the products use.
The company has filed a lawsuit in a district court in the United States and has even filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission.
“The products at issue generally concern microprocessors included in a variety of electronic products such as certain smartphones, tablet computers, portable media players and other computing devices,” the complaint reads.
Industry watchers are tying the lawsuit filed by Via to Apple’s ongoing patent battle with smartphone maker HTC, which is also based in Taiwan. It has emerged that Via’s chairman is married to HTC’s chairperson Cher Wang, who also helped him found Via.
Apple is currently engaged in multiple legal battles with its competitors in the smartphone market like HTC and Samsung, both of which offer devices based on Google’s Android platform, which has displaced Apple’s iOS as the number 1 mobile phone platform in the United States.
Verizon Communications Chief Says ‘Too Many Smartphone Platforms on the Market’

According to Verizon Communications’ chief executive officer Lowell McAdam, it is a fact that today’s market can no longer afford to have so many smartphone platforms.
McAdam highlighted thatthere were too many smaprtphone platforms, including Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android, RIM’s BlackBerry, Nokia’s Symbian, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and HP’s WebOS, fighting to be at the top.
The CEO also said that too many platforms was too much for carriers to handle, and hence one or two of them eventually have to go down.
And that’s exactly what had happened. Nokia officially ditched its Symbian platform and started focusing on the Windows Phone 7 platform. HP also abandoned its WebOS and is trying to sell it to a third party- at least that’s what rumors say.
“The carriers are beginning to coalesce around the need for a third ecosystem,” said McAdam, as reported by Information Week.
“Over the next 12 months I think it will coalesce and you will start to see one emerge as a legitimate third ecosystem. In my opinion, it’ll be between RIM and Microsoft, and I expect Microsoft to come out victorious,” he added.
