PostHeaderIcon Nokia Unleashes Play To Beta With DLNA Support For Windows Phone

Currently allows for video streaming, although music streaming yet to be added

Having just updated Nokia Transport, Drive and Maps for Lumia owners, the Finnish company has some more good news on the software front for Windows Phone addicts.

WM Power User spotted the fact that Nokia released the beta version of Play To for its Lumia phones. The application is available to download now, and incorporates support for DLNA.

In other words, you can use it to stream videos or pictures wirelessly to other DLNA devices in your house, such as TVs, Blu-ray players and other gadgets. While the beta doesn’t yet support music streaming – that’s planned for a future release – Nokia assures Lumia owners.

Nokia also wants feedback from users on the app. WMPU also noted that Nokia stated: “We want to get this great app out in the Marketplace for all Nokia customers to enjoy, but we want to make sure they have a great experience. Your feedback will make that happen. We’d like to help in verifying interoperability with different devices and network configurations. Note that there are some known limitations, though, so please check those before you post new feedback.

“For future releases, we’re also working on supporting music sharing and planning functionality to allow your handset to act as a DLNA Media Server. This means your Microsoft Xbox360 and similar devices would be able to discover and play memories from your phone. Stay tuned for this exciting functionality!”

PostHeaderIcon Sony Gives Xperia Neo L Ice Cream Sandwich

Sony has announced a brand-new addition to its Xperia line of phones, and it has finally made the wise decision to give it Android Ice Cream Sandwich as standard. Good news, right? Yes and no, as it’s great news that Sony Mobile has embraced the here-and-now, but not so great that the phone is destined for China.

The device in question is the Xperia Neo L, a good-looking Android phone with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, a 5 megapixel camera and a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 854. So, a good spec made better with the addition of Android 4.0.

Sony’s recent Xperia devices have all been given Android 2.3 as standard, even its high-end devices such as the Xperia S. An update to Ice Cream Sandwich will be provided, but given the amount of time updates take to filter through to users – this is of little comfort.

It’s a shame then that the Xperia Neo L won’t be coming to the UK, as Sony Mobile has indicated it’ll only be released in China later this year. Of course, there’s always a chance it’ll find a home elsewhere, but Sony hasn’t mentioned it yet.

Having the latest version of Android on your phone isn’t everything though, and here in the UK we’ve got the choice of either the Xperia U, which has a slightly smaller screen but comes with a dual-core 1GHz NovaThor processor, or the new Xperia Sola with its clever ‘floating touch’ technology instead. Both serve up similar specifications to the Neo L, just without Android 4.0.

PostHeaderIcon Sony Files Fingerprint Checking Smartphone Patent

Sensor to be embedded underneath the display

Mobile technology is evolving quickly, and it’s always interesting to get a glimpse of what’s in the pipeline for future smartphones (aside from the obvious faster processors, improved displays, more efficient batteries and the like).

The latest patent from Sony involves the use of technology which checks the phone user’s fingerprint via the touchscreen display. That represents a beefy extra level of security in terms of locking the smartphone to its owner.

The BBC reports that the tech would utilise a “light-transmissive display” to allow sensors to look out from behind the display and detect the fingerprint. An “unidentified” material would obscure the sensor from the user’s view, so as not to blemish the phone’s aesthetics.

As the Beeb notes, fingerprint technology isn’t new, having been used on laptops already, and indeed smartphones as seen with Motorola’s innovative Atrix. Sony’s solution is much neater than Motorola’s rear-mounted scanner, however, given that it won’t make any visible impact on the phone’s sleek lines. It would also be easier to use.

The patent notes: “The technology would allow even a user who is not familiar with the fingerprint authentication to readily execute an input manipulation for the fingerprint authentication.”

Furthermore, Sony’s concept could allow for the front-facing camera to be stowed away underneath the screen, leaving room to expand the phone’s display to an even larger size. Using the camera would also feel more natural, as you’d be looking at both the display and directly into the camera lens at the same time.

PostHeaderIcon HTC Gain Ground On Apple In Terms Of User Experience

A recent survey has found that although Apple is the favoured manufacturer of smartphone consumers, Android devices created by HTC are pushing strongly for second place.

Over 7,000 smartphone users were surveyed for market research firm JD Power’s  latest biannual report, in which they were asked to rate the user experience provided by their handset using criteria such as battery life, design and ease of use.

In Vol. 1 of the 2012 Wireless Smartphone Satisfaction Study which resulted (volume 2 follows later in the year), Apple scored 839 out of a possible 1000 points – establishing the company as the field leader for the seventh consecutive report.

Only HTC came close to matching that impressive tally with 798, making them the leading Android manufacturer – and the only other smartphone maker to exceed the industry’s average score of 774.

This report, taken from data recorded during the second half of last year, also found that HTC was one of only three companies – along with Apple and Nokia – to improve upon its customer satisfaction scores from the last report.

Whilst it’s not exactly racing up the charts, the improvement must come as good news to Nokia, whose troubles with faltering phone sales and job cuts look to be abating slightly.

Trailing the leading pack were Samsung (769) and Motorola (758), while the hit to BlackBerry’s reputation last summer continues to see it drop to 733 points, and tie with LG in fifth place.

According to the research, the main bugbear of smartphone users concerned the battery life of their devices with the introduction of 4G technology attributed as a key factor in the reduction of “battery life” scores on 4G devices down to 6.1 out of 10 on average. In comparison, 3G users rated their handsets an average 6.7 out of 10.

PostHeaderIcon iPhone 4 Self-Combusts During Overnight Charging

The iPhone, a real bomb

According to a recent incident, iPhone 4 owners should avoid recharging their smartphone overnight because it could catch fire.

One user, a 51-year-old woman from Colorado who wished to remain anonymous, explained that her iPhone self-combusted while charging. At the time she was on her way to the East Coast and put her phone to charge overnight, placing the device 12 to 14 inches away from her head.

Very early in the morning, the woman wasawakened by a strange smell and heard”sizzling” and “popping” noises. Seconds after she realised that the cause was the iPhone 4 which suffered “not quite an explosion, but an immense crackling,” and filled the room with smoke.

Shewasclearly scared by the incident, but so far she said that she doesn’t intend to sue. The unlucky user only wants Apple to acknowledge the issue and to warn other users to keep an eye on their iPhones. Her main concern is to keep other iPhone owners safe.

”It’s so important for me to have people know about this,” she explained to Mashable. “They Apple are giving me the classic corporate runaround, and I understand and respect that. But people knowing about this is the most important thing to me.”

PostHeaderIcon Samsung Galaxy S3 Picture Leaked?

Yet another blurry picture

Yet another picture of what looks like the Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone has appeared online courtesy of crowdsourcing website Reddit which ought therefore to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The poster says that his/her friend works at Samsung “in a respectable” position and was able to take the picture and share it with some friends.

Some sites like Cnet have already debunked it as a bad example of Photoshoppery with the modified picture looking very much like a hastily put together job (and a Galaxy S2 with the screen of a Galaxy Nexus photoshopped onto it).

The photo itself doesn’t tell much; the phone may have two launchers for that comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface and the other one that is an untouched version of Ice Cream Sandwich like the Galaxy Nexus.

Other rumours that have surfaced lately regarding the Samsung Galaxy S3 include a May release date, a March release date, a 4.7-inch Full HD screen, a quad core processor (either a Tegra camera,3 or an Exynos 4412), up to 2GB RAM, a 2250mAh battery, a 12megapixel and a ceramic case.

Samsung’s current top of the range handset is still the Galaxy S2 (and its various flavours).

PostHeaderIcon Apple Won’t Go 3G In China, Samsung Capitalises Heavily

Apple’s iPhone may be the market leader in smartphones around the world, but in the Far East it’s being outsold three-to-one by Samsung – and the tech giants have only themselves to blame.

Their decision not to construct an iPhone compatible with TD-SCDMA, the 3G standard provided only by carrier China Mobile (CM), has cost them a potential 655 million customers; the amount of CM subscribers and a customer base that is two times larger than the entire population of the United States.

Apple’s refusal to build the TD-SCDMA phone – and thus to meet unprecedented demand for their product following the egg-pelting incident at Beijing’s Apple Store – has allowed competitors willing to meet that standard to put some distance between themselves and Apple in the Chinese market; competitors such as Samsung, whose smartphones currently account for almost a quarter of all those sold in China.

Following that incident at the Apple Store, iPhones were removed entirely from the shops although they remain available online. With this in mind, Samsung have widened the gap even further on Apple with an eye to staking their claim on the soon to be expected 137 million smartphones in China – a figure that sees the United States overtaken for the first time as the leading smartphone users.

Market expert Kim Young Chan of Shinhan Investment said, “It’s just one country, but it’s such a big market and its portion in the global market is huge, so Samsung is trying to act fast to capture the market.” He went on to say, “Dealing with different network standards will give them a pretty valuable competitive edge.”

It remains to be seen whether or not Samsung can retain that edge as China moves into the 4G age.
