PostHeaderIcon Nokia’s Next Symbian Phone Could Be Its Last

Symbian’s life has been hanging by a thread for sometime now, after the Android-of-its-day was systematically abandoned by manufacturers – remember both Samsung and Sony Ericsson once supported it, see the Omnia i8910 HD and the Satio for example 0 and even Nokia themselves opting to go with Windows Phone over the ageing platform.

If a new report is true, we could be getting very close to the final hurrah for Symbian, as The Register says Nokia has just one last phone running the operating system to launch, and that will be that.

Although other Symbian devices were in development, they’ve now been cancelled following lower than expected sales figures, with CEO Stephen Elop hinting the demand for low-cost smartphones is making it too difficult to compete.

Symbian could be going out with a bang though, as its rumoured swansong is to be a Nokia N8 sequel. The N8 has long been the best camera-phone on the market, and is one of the few devices still to feature a xenon flash; but it’s 16 months old and ripe for a refresh.

While new hardware may not continue, Nokia has repeatedly promised to continue supporting the software for several years yet – with 2016 often provided as an end date. There’s no reason not to think they’ll stick to their word, as we’ve got Nokia Belle coming soon, plus there has been talk of other updates for the future.

Perhaps we’ll find out more during Mobile World Congress, where there’s a chance we may meet the final phone too.

PostHeaderIcon Apple Take 3rd Place in Global Mobile Market

New data from market intelligence firm IDC this week places Apple as the third largest manufacturer of mobile phones, in a fourth quarter of 2011 which overall showed surprisingly little growth on the same period of 2010.

Apple’s latest model, the iPhone 4S, was partly responsible for a jump of almost double the number of units shipped over the last calendar year compared to 2010, increasing from 47.5 million to 93.2 million in a jump of over 96%.

With Apple gaining so much ground in the smartphone race for market share, there had to be losers and the primary victim of the surge was LG, whose reported drop of almost 25 percentage points in smartphone sales between the end of 2010 and two months ago has badly affected shareholder confidence.

The Korean manufacturer’s overall market share is only down from 8.4% to 5.7%, though considering the huge amount of smartphones purchased in that year (nearly one and a half billion, up 11.1% on 2010), LG’s growth has certainly slowed compared to the iPhone’s success story.

The top two mobile makers remained unchanged with Samsung in second after near one-fifth growth year-on-year, whilst leaders Nokia, who also reported a loss of ground to Apple maintain top spot despite sales down from 453 million during 2010 to 417 over the last calendar year.

PostHeaderIcon iPhone 4S Rival Alert : Nokia Lumia 800 Now Down To £360

The price of the SIM Free/Unlocked version of the Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phone smartphone has dropped to 360 at Ebuyer, a 10 per cent shortly after the handset officially went on sale.

It is not known whether the price drop could be due to the newly launched US-bound Lumia 900 which has a bigger screen and a front facing camera.

We did notice however that the cheaper Nokia Lumia 710 was on sale at O2 for just under 200 making it the cheapest Windows Phone Mango handset on the market; that is a third off its original suggested retail price (although the one from O2 is locked).

The Lumia 800 comes with a 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED capacitive ClearBlack touchscreen, a single core Qualcomm Snapdragon clocked at 1.4GHz, an eight megapixel camera with flash and HD recording capabilities, 512MB RAM, 16GB onboard storage and an array of Nokia and Microsoft services.

These include Microsoft Office Mobile, Internet Explorer 9, Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, Nokia Music, Mix Radio as well as Xbox Live, Zune and Marketplace.

Nokia will have a press conference on Monday February 27th at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and we suspect that they will unveil one new handset.

PostHeaderIcon T-Mobile Debuts iPhone 4, HTC Sensation XE, Lumia 800 On Full Python Unlimited Package

Mobile phone operator T-Mobile is now offering a choice of 34 handsets on its newly-introduced Full Python packageswith one of them being the cheapest all unlimited deal in the UK.

Users get unlimited texts, cross network minutes and data (including Wi-Fi courtesy of BT Openzone) for as little as 41; the Apple iPhone 4 16GB, the HTC Sensation XE and the Nokia Lumia 800 are on offer although you can also choose cheaper models (like the T-100 Mobile Vivacity).

O2 also offers an unlimited package for 60 on a two year contract but the deal doesn’t include unlimited data or tethering; you only get 100MB.

The closest thing on the market is the 25 The One Plan from Three which offers 2000 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data with tethering but no Wi-Fi.

T-Mobile also offers a cheaper Full Monty package that comes with 2000 minutes and unlimited T-Mobile calls for 36.

Unfortunately, the package doesn’t include the swappable boosters which were hitherto available and includes free calls to Europe and other selected countries.

Expect Three Network to debut a similar (and possibly cheaper) package fairly soon as it fends off competition from Everything Everywhere’s budget brand.

PostHeaderIcon Nokia’s Q4 Losses Stand at €1 Billion, Elop Pins Hope on Lumia Smartphones

Nokia, the world’s largest mobile phone maker by volume has announced a €1.07 billion loss for the final quarter of 2011. According to the company, the loss can be primarily attributed to a steady decline of its smartphone sales across the world and that despite a comparatively better performance by Lumia line up of smartphones.

On Thursday, the company posted a worrying 21 percent year-on-year decline in its sales, barely making it to the €10 billion mark for the last quarter of 2011. Apart from that, the handset sales also lowered substantially – by 29 percent to be more specific.

“In the war of ecosystems, clearly there are some strong contenders already on the field. And with Lumia, we have demonstrated that we belong on the field,” Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop said in a statement while expressing his sense of optimism for the days ahead, ZDNet reports.

Windows phone powered Lumia range of smartphones may be the light at the end of the tunnel for Nokia as they may be able to steer the company away from the swap of losses. Elop has revealed that Nokia has sold more than a million units of Lumia smartphones and these figures might be the reason behind his optimism for the days to come.

PostHeaderIcon Leaked LG X3 Could Have a Quad-Core Processor

A rendered image of a new LG phone has been leaked, and is said to picture the X3, a phone that will introduce the quad-core processor to LG’s range. The device itself wouldn’t standout in a crowd of one at the moment, but is notable for the three buttons below the screen, rather than the usual four found on Android devices.

The X3 name is also most likely a code-name, as apart from already being used in the past by Nokia (and attached to the Sony Ericsson Rachael, which subsequently became the Xperia X10) LG has so far stuck rigidly to the Optimus brand name in Europe and the UK, while indulging their creative side for US launches. See the LG Nitro and Revolution for proof.

If they do decide to use a similar name though, it would make more sense to go with X4, as the phone is said to be one of the first run of smartphones to use the Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Exciting stuff, as the Tegra 3 chip looks very special indeed.

The leak also suggests the X3 will feature a 4.7-inch touchscreen with a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, 16GB of storage, an 8 megapixel camera, NFC and Google Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The chassis will measure less than 9mm, and a considerably beefed up 2000mAh battery will keep the monster processor well-fed.

Rumoured for a summer launch, we could be seeing the LG X3 at next month’s Mobile World Congress, when it’ll probably join quad-core offerings from HTC and Samsung amongst others.

PostHeaderIcon Nokia Lumia 710 now available for Rs 15,500

Nokia has slashed prices of its Lumia 710 smartphone. The Windows Phones operating system based handset is now available for Rs 15,500 through Flipkart and Letsbuy.

The Lumia 710 sports a 3.7-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display screen with 480 x 800 pixel of resolution and runs on Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) OS. It comes with a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Scorpion Processor with 512 MB RAM and has Adreno 205 GPU.

Nokia Lumia offers a 5 megapixel camera lens with LED flash light. This helps you to click images and record HD videos. It supports 4x digital focus and 3x video zoom. The handset records HD videos with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution at 30 fps. Other camera features like Geo-Tagging, touch focus, continuous auto focus, exposure compensation, auto and manual white balance and image editor provides better quality images.

Lumia with its 1300 mAh Li-Ion battery claims to provide a talk time up to six hours in 2G and seven hours on 3G . The phone has an inbuilt memory of up to 8 GB which helps you store files of your choice.

With the price reduction, Nokia Lumia 710 becomes the cheapest smartphone with such high-end specification not just in terms of the processor but also in terms of screen and camera. If you look at an Android phone with similar spec you will have to shell out at least Rs 22,000.

PostHeaderIcon Apple iPhone 5 : Round up of 2012’s biggest release

It’s been a while since we’ve posted about the Apple iPhone 5. After months of anticipation and excitement across 2011, we were presented the iPhone 4S; an upgrade of the Apple iPhone 4 with more muscle inside its A5 processor chip and more knowledge through personal assistant Siri. Even though the upgrades were necessary, Apple fans couldn’t help but feel slightly disheartened. We love it when Apple releases something completely new that “Changes everything. Again”. With leading brands releasing the Samsung Galaxy S3, Sony Xperia S & the Nokia Lumia 900, 2012 is the year for Apple to step up and release the true next generation smartphone: The Apple iPhone 5.

As all our old blogs relate to the 4S, we thought it was time to blow away the cobwebs, delve deep into the rumour mill and bring you the latest designs, specifications and more on everything iPhone 5.

New design – Apple iPhone 5

A new design is possibly the most anticipated feature expected for the iPhone 5. The iPhone 4 and 4s have stylish designs but all fashions change with time. iPhone enthusiasts want to own something that looks new, fresh and distinctly different from past iPhone models. One feature that would separate the Apple iPhone 5 from its range is a new screen size. It’s a quick win for Apple as their standard 3.5 inch display is towered by the Samsung Galaxy S2’s 4.3 inch screen. Would a larger screen on the iPhone affect sales of their iPad range? This could be the reason for sustaining the iPhone’s original size. Will the iPhone 5 have a new shape? Here’s our three favourite concept designs below..

We’re certain the iPhone 5 will host a new look design.

Apple iPhone 5 rumour rating 5/5

New Name or just iPhone 5?

The strangest rumour we’ve heard so far is that the device will be named the iPhone SJ, in memory of the late Steve Jobs. This is the last iPhone which Jobs had an input into the design and features of the device. Although it seems a fitting tribute to the icon who retransformed the fortunes of Apple with his innovation and industry changing ideas, we think there’s only a moderate chance the iPhone 5 will be named the iPhone SJ

UK release date?

One of the safest guarantees is that the iPhone 5 will in our hands by October 2012. It’s more than likely the product would also be available within 10 days of announcement. For a company that loves to throw surprises and spontaneity, is an October release date too predictable? Apple would certainly please a large fan base if they released the iPhone 5 ahead of the date cited by many blogs. The reasoning for an iPhone 5 release towards the end of 2012, is to allow time for the iPhone 4S to sell enough units. With Sony and Samsung releasing their next generation smartphones in the spring and summer, we believe Apple are more likely to unveil their latest addition to the family within their older June/July iPhone release date format. With Android OS racking up the largest share of users on any platform, the last thing Apple needs is to give the Galaxy S3 and Sony Xperia S a head start. We’re confident that the iPhone 5 will be released in 2012 and hoping for a summer release.
