Hewlett Packard hopes it will be second time propitious as it confirms the launch of its Palm Pre 2 smartphone on the market in the UK.

The latest gadget should smack the shelves Monday, November 15th and will set client back £399. The UK launch will not see the handset tied to an limited carrier and will be SIM-free and unlocked.
The novel apparatus sports the new webOS 2.0 operating system. The new Palm Pre 2 is the first smart phone launch since HP’s acquired Palm, it’s also the first webOS phone to be launched since the Pre and Pixi.

The new mobile phone features a 3.1-inch touchscreen display with a  320 by 480 pixels (HVGA) resolution. It also boasts a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

“HP webOS 2.0 is the biggest leap forward for webOS since it launched 17 months ago,” said Miles Norman, sales director UK & Ireland, Palm EMEA Business Unit, HP.  “It expands the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers, and introduces powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device.”

The Pre 2 comes with a 1GHz processor, a 5-megapixel rear camera. It also comes with 16GB of internal storage over and above support for memory cards.

The original device also comes with multimedia features, supporting formats such as MP3, AAC, AAC+ music files, and MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264 video files.

The company plans on making the webOS 2.0 update available for existing Pre and Pixi users, over the coming weeks.

It seems that both Apple and Palm consumers have something to be dissatisfied about with regards to recently rolled out updates for their devices.

In Apple’s corner, the iOS 4.0.1 update was intended to somewhat fix the iPhone 4’s prevalent antenna issue. Since Apple has been insisting that the reception difficulties the iPhone 4 has been experiencing may be attributed to a simple miscalculation in their signal formulas, there was a ray of hope when they proclaimed an upcoming software update.

However, it seems that the iOS 4.0.1 update did little to progress the signal issue. Instead, it just made the sign bars showed on the iPhone 4’s screen look a little bigger.

Well, in terms of the code, Apple did modify the algorithm slightly so that the signal bars displayed will be a little less optimistic. This does not progress anything when you accidentally block the iPhone 4’s lower left portion.

If that is not enough, some of those who have tried to install this update early have been met with problems, particularly when trying to install using their desktop computers. This has resulted in a few bricked iPhone units. As shown by their recent actions, Apple seems to treat the mobile industry as a joke. The once inexorable giant is now torment blows left and right from disappointed users and competition that they happened to pull into their mess (like RIM).

In the Palm corner, the newest WebOS update has also been released to the public. Version 1.4.5 for the Pre and the Pixi (along with the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus units, of course) has resulted in an irritating issue for developers.

In its place of helping Palm units turn into decent mobile gaming units, a software trouble ensures just the opposite. It prevents any app from having access to the mobile handset’s internal data, resulting in a number of crashes.
